Krishna Pushkaralu

 

The Krishna Pushkaralu (similar to Godavari Pushkaralu held last year) will take place in Andhra from 12 to 23 August 2016. Three crore people are expected to participate. Both AP and Telangana Governments are making significant efforts to ensure the quiet and fruitful celebration of the event.

 

2018 national games in Vizag?

 

Andhra may host the 2018 National Games. On the sidelines of the Gandhigundam Stadium construction review, the Minister for Sports hinted at this possibility. A slew of new stadia are coming up in Vizag and plans are afoot to make the city a sporting destination.

IIT coming up

The Indian Institute of Technology is opening another outlet, this time in Dharwad. The Central HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, along with Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah, will inaugurate a temporary campus on 31 July. The government has handed 470 acres to the IIT Development Board for the permanent campus.

 

No more rang-birang Ganesh

 

It’s time to say goodbye to Ganesh idols. Or, so it seems. The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board announced a ban on Ganesh idols made of PoP (Plaster of Paris) and painted with chemically loaded colours. Seems like even ‘Bappa’ wanted no more harm to the earth.

 

Jr Ambassador heads to Japan

 

Eleven year old Anoop A Rao, a seventh standard student of St Aloysius English Higher Primary School, Kodialbail, has been selected as Junior Ambassador to participate in the 28th Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC) to be held in Fukuoka City. The aim of this convention is to make the children ‘global citizens’, wherein they learn to respect different races, people, culture and beliefs.

Looking for a substitute for coffee? Try Jaffee, a hot drink prepared from jackfruit seed. The product tastes and has the same aroma of coffee. It is, however, free from caffeine and is rich in fibre and proteins. A 200 gram sachet costs about Rs 85.

 

KERALA

The fat tax imposed by Kerala

The Kerala government has imposed “fat-tax” from this financial year to curb junk food.  This tax will apply to the consumption of Pizza, and other fatty fast foods, which are available off the shelf. The tax has evoked very sharp shrill protests from big names in fast food like McDonald’s, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Domino’s Pizza and Subway.

 

Consider Poker as a skill game

 

Kerala has banned Poker. A group of members of All India Gaming Federation has petitioned the government to exclude the game from the Kerala Gaming Act. Karnataka, Nagaland and West Bengal have recognised the game as one of skill. The members said that it would boost tourism, hospitality, technology and other industries and usher investments in the state.

 

TELANGANA

ISRO tie up to watch over water bodies

The irrigation department is joining hands with ISRO to set up the Telangana Water Resources Information System. This system will keep an eye on the sky on state’s water resources. ISRO will update the system with new satellite imagery of all water bodies every fortnight. Officers can use the data provided by the images to plan efficient water use.
