Monsoon fury

This year, across India the monsoon is above normal and in Kerala it is no different. Many parts of Kerala has been experiencing very heavy rainfall with strong winds at 45-55 km per hour. The Kerala Government is on high alert as the Mullaiperiyar dam is fast filling up. The water level in the dam is near full – 135 feet of 136 feet.

The southwest monsoon has also brought in damage to the agricultural sector estimating around Rs 120 crore. State government has sought for financial assistance of Rs 5660 crore from the Union government to cope with the monsoon related calamities that claimed 175 lives, damaged 60,000 houses and ravaged over 50 per cent of roads across the state. Out of the 151,652 kms of roads in the state more than 50 per cent have been severely damaged. 78 flood relief camps have been opened in Ernakulam.

Cochin international airport was shut down for 48 hours due to incessant rain. Heavy flow of water following the opening of Idamalayar dam shutters added to the woes of the airport which is located downstream the dam. 18 international and 28 domestic flights were cancelled.     This is the first time in the last two decades that the state has faced such rain fury!
