Jeppiar calls it a day

A cop, a lawyer, a politician and finally an educationist Dr Jeppiaar, the man who founded Sathyabama University, donned several hats during his life.

Former government chief whip of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council during M G Ramachandran’s regime, he was special envoy to the Chief Minister. As Chairman of Madras Water Supply and Sewage Board, he was instrumental in organising water supply through tanker systems and pipelines during the days of water scarcity.

In 1998, he established the Sathyabama Engineering College and quickly followed it in 1994 with the St.Joseph’s College of Engineering. Soon he set up a slew of institutions like the Panimalar Engineering College, Jeppiaar Engineering College, Sathyabama Dental College, Panimalar School of Management, Jeppiaar International School.

He was also into films. He produced seven Tamil movies, directed one and acted in another. He was popular for his YouTube videos talking about important social issues like dress, walk  and smile.  He established several companies with varying degrees of success.

He died on 18 June 2016 and was 84 years old.  The funeral took place at Sathyabama University, Chennai.
