The motor sportsman is no more

Born with a silver spoon, S Muthukrishnan took more interest in motor sports than in running  the family’s core business.

While the Standard Motor Products of India founded by his grandfather K Gopalakrishna flourished along with the multitude of ancillary units that it set up, Muthukrishnan was associated with three of them: Hydraulics Ltd, Carburettors  Ltd and Ucal Fuel Systems Ltd.  However, his heart lay elsewhere: Muthu took active interest in motor racing and was part of the motor sports enthusiasts who set up the race track at Irungattukottai. I remember him as a quiet contemporary at the Intermediate classes at Loyola College. Soft spoken and genial he was associated with trade associations like AIEI (that later became CII), ACMA and a few social welfare organisations like the Chatnath Trust. Muthukrishnan breathed his last on 4 July 2015.
