Indigenously developed technology for AL’s BS-4 vehicles

Hinduja Flagship Ashok Leyland has come out with an Indian innovation to comply with BS-IV norms. The company’s new technology – intelligent exhaust gas recirculation (iEGR) – not only seeks to match the proven western technology but also promises reliability and better fuel efficiency in its vehicles.

“We have come with this technology that is uniquely Indian, designed by Indians for Indians and we are proud to launch it for the first time in the world,” said Vinod Dasari, Managing Director, Ashok Leyland.

Globally, two technologies are used for BS-IV norms – selective catalytic reduction (SCR),  used by global auto majors such as Daimler and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).

EGR is better suited to Indian conditions and is compared to SCR technology (based on European technology) also hugely cost effective, easy to operate and hassle-free to maintain, said Dasari.

He explained that SCR needed a stronger electronic system to manage it. Also, SCR technology needed an additional diesel exhaust fluid called AdBlue, which will involve extra cost.

 With its new technology, the company can upgrade its unsold stock of BS-III vehicles to BS-IV compliant by just swapping the engines.

The company has already converted more than 250 vehicles into BS-IV compliant ones and seeks to convert the remaining in the next 2-3 months. Some portion of BS-III trucks will be shipped to export markets.
