Smooth sailing of SAIL

“Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) achieved a 14 per cent higher turnover during 2016-17. The increase was contributed by measures enriching the company’s product mix,” said P K Singh, Chairman.

Addressing the 45th Annual General Meeting he mentioned that SAIL had produced, since inception, 475 million tonnes of crude steel and has partnered in all major national projects.

SAIL had a turnover of Rs 49,180 crore in 2016-17 (Rs 43,294 crore)

 All the major units of SAIL at Bokaro, Bhilai, Durgapur, Burnpur and Rourkela have been through modernisation and expansion plans. An instance of SAIL’s invaluable contribution was provided at the recent inauguration of the Sardar Sarovar Project: SAIL had supplied around 85,000 tonnes of steel, forming 80 per cent of steel required by SSP.

I have been deeply impressed with the consistently profitable Bhilai Steel Plant’s record in meeting the expanding requirements of sectors like the railways. The rail mill at BSP has been meeting the needs for rails to increasing sophistication. The new universal rail mill at BSP inaugurated earlier this year produces the world’s longest single piece rail, 130 meters. Chairman Singh mentioned that supplies of welded, 260 meter rail panels to the railways are in progress.

The recent launch of the high speed rail project at Ahmedabad by the Prime Ministers of Japan and India at a cost of Rs 108,000 crore has the pro-mise of opening up new vistas.

Japanese have been leaders in sophisticated steel technology. There is a great opportunity to work on a massive expansion of steel capacity. In less than 20 years, China focused on steel and today accounts for half the global crude steel production. India, whose production was comparable to that of China hardly three decades ago, today produces less than an eighth of Chinese production.  With huge potential for consumption of steel by the high priority infrastructure sector, India should explore the possibilities of working together with Japan to expand steel capacity and in big volumes. Developing the technology needed for high speed rails would help the extending HSR systems simultaneously in different parts of India. – SV
