Michelin to double Chennai capacity

French tyre maker Michelin will double the production capacity of its Chennai plant from 15,000 tonnes pa to more than 30,000 tonnes by the end of 2018. The expansion is expected to generate 150 new jobs. The company has so far invested Rs 3500 crore in Chennai factory and in its R & D Centre that serves both Indian and global requirements.

“I believe there is a tremendous potential for mobility in the country,” said CEO Michelin Group, Jean Senard. The company has just launched a new truck and bus radial (TBR) tyre range called X Guard, which has been exclusively designed, engineered and made for India and promises 10 per cent more fuel efficiency.

Michelin has also signed up with Ashok Leyland (AL) for supply of this new tyre range. This is the second OEM tie-up for Michelin in commercial vehicle segment after Volvo.  “Michelin has been gaining market share across categories. We sell tyres through 5000 outlets across the country,” said Mohan Kumar, Executive Vice President, Michelin India.

Truck and bus radial tyres are made at its Chennai plant and two wheeler tyres are produced through a tie-up with TVS Tyres. But, car and other tyres are imported and sold in the Indian market.
