Brutalities against children

With the increasing incidence of cases of cruelty against children, the Kerala government has decided to enact a law to protect child rights.

Recently, a five year-old child, allegedly tortured by his father and stepmother, was brought to a government hospital at Kottayam in Kerala. The state government responded by adopting the child and has taken legal measures against the erring parents. There was a similar case where a seven-year old girl died in Calicut after being allegedly tortured by her stepmother.

The solar scam

Proposed airport at Kannur

Kerala’s fourth international airport will open in Kannur by December 2015. To be built at an estimated cost of Rs 1700 crore, seven companies have been shortlisted in the pre-qualification bid. A study has indicated that 1.5 million passengers would use this airport and would handle 86,000 tonnes of cargo a year.

Visualised first in 1996 by the then chief minister EK Nayanar, successive governments had approved the project. In 2010, the Achuthanandan government had laid the foundation stone for the airport. The airport is a public-private initiative with an equity holding of 26 per cent by the state government, 23 per cent by state and central public sector units, two per cent by Infrastructures Kerala Limited (INKEL). The remaining 49 per cent would be private participation for which shares have already been floated.
