Reliance’s TV – 18 ready to launch Tamil News Channel

The Tamil news TV space is all set to become even more crowded. Already, there are around 94 Tamil Channels, of which 7 are news channels.  A couple of decades ago, it was the norm for any and every politician to run an engineering college, a medical college or at least a school. Today, the in thing for politicians is to run a TV channel.

This time, the entrance is by the giant Reliance. It acquired the Eenadu TV and later CNN-IBN TV18 from Raghav Bahl,  has emerged strong in 24/7 news presentation.

The group is getting ready to launch its Tamil 24/7 channel. It has roped in Gunasekaran from Puthiya Thalaimurai as the chief executive.

Thanthi TV under the lead of Rangaraj Pandey supported by a strong team of professionals like Hariharan has revamped the old NDTV–Hindu network and has been running it as a professionally strong news channel. The content is quite varied and the presentations are of high standard. Particularly inspiring are Pandey’s hour-long sharp interviews with political leaders, other public men and women and his discussion forum. The analysis of the campaign and the results of the Tamil Nadu elections were of high quality and the channel predicted the election result the closest computed by a young psephologist.

Puthiya Thalaimurai, also endowed richly with resources of the SRM Group, has been running its news channel well.

News7, promoted by Vaikuntarajan of Tuiticorin, started well by inducting the senior journalist Bhagwan Singh as CEO, but after Rajan fell out with the AIADMK leadership, the channel has been on the decline.

So the proliferation of Tamil TV channels continues. One wonders how these are sustained - are these also channels for laundering black money?
