New IT products of Ramco in the pipeline…

I met P R Venketrama Raja (PVR), soon after he assumed charge as the Chairman of the Ramco Group, after the demise of his father. Ramco Group, with a turnover of a billion dollars and 14,000 plus employees, has presence across cotton and synthetic yarn, cement, building products, software solutions, bio-technology... The flagship cement business under Ramco Cements produces 16.5 million tonnes a year with five integrated cement plants and four grinding units and the fifth largest producer of cement in the country.

PVR studied at the University of Michigan and a student of Management Guru, C K Prahalad.  PVR has been focusing on developing IT products at the Rs 500 crore Ramco Systems. His company has wide custom in developed markets of the west. PVR referred to more IT products getting ready for launch and expressed confidence over their making a good impact.

The IT software sector has been thriving on exports. Over 90 per cent of the revenues of leading Indian IT companies come from exports. With the impressive Digital India programme, does PVR envisage big domestic custom? PVR is not much optimistic over this. He pointed to the entry barriers caused by powerful MNCs and leading global consultancy firms stipulating parameters that favour large established multinationals.  PVR, however, pointed to the rich scope for exports at handsome rates.

The group has built a strong reputation for its textiles business. The yarn produced by Rajapalayam Mills enjoys wide reputation. PVR pointed to the company assessing the prospects for manufacture of specialised fabrics that are presently imported in large quantities by the garment sector.
