This scant respect for Law

Political leaders with social consciousness should inculcate respect for and adherence to the law. Yatha Raja, Tatha Praja, like leader, like citizen.

Tamil Nadu and its leaders seem to have utter disregard for the law. Political parties, abetted by news television, are encouraging this disgraceful practice. Look at a simple requirement as keeping your driving licence while driving. This is necessitated by widespread malpractices as also by the humungous loss of lives due to road accidents; this is routinely adhered to  in developed countries.

Look at the protests by political parties, sections of media and sundry pressure groups. If this is a law, it has to be obeyed; or opinion must be mustered to get the law changed. Take another instance, of NEET. This issue had been debated for months, discussed ad nauseam, argued in the High Court... The Supreme Court provided a year’s extension in which the state could have taken steps to prepare its students for the new regime.

Tests were conducted, results were compiled and attempts at stalling it were stopped by the Supreme Court. But political parties continue to keep the issue alive. The state government and even a few senior political leaders of the party in power at the Centre did attempt  change through an ordinance. But after the highest court was firm in enforcing NEET, the society should treat it as final.

Popular leaders who commanded huge following like M Karunanidhi, MGR and J Jayalalithaa flouted court rulings with gay abandon. Look just at the SC directing resumption of work on laying a gas pipeline through western Tamil Nadu in January 2016. This after prolonged litigation at the Madras High Court and Supreme Court. No, the state government just would not act and denies significant benefits to several lakhs consumers of the seven western districts. One needs just to look at the benefits derived by Gujarat.

One man’s peach is another’s poison Anitha who committed suicide got 80 out of 700 in the NEET but 1176 out of 1200 in her +2 exams. If on that score she deserved admission, look at the hundreds of brilliant students of Tamil Nadu who scored very high marks in NEET but sought to be denied seats.

While even developed countries like the US are striving hard to improve educational standards, should Tamil Nadu continue to harp on glorifying mediocrity? Renowned educationist Dr M Anandakrishan shed tears over 100,0000 engineering graduates, and on the streets due to their poor quality and unemployability. There is urgent need to win back for Tamil Nadu its past reputation for producing students of excellence. Why this diffidence on the ability of the state’s students to compete with the best in other states?
