Kudos to NDTV...

Prannoy Roy and his illustrious team of TV journalists at NDTV deserve kudos for their social concerns and deep involvement in social amelioration. Every year Roy and his prized lieutenant, Vikram Chandra, devote time, energies and resources on a topical, emerging issue. For a few years they ran a spirited campaign for providing solar power to hundreds of villages spread across the country, getting wide support from business and political leaders, policymakers, film personalities and other socially conscious citizens.

One may also remember the brilliant series on coastal degradation, by NDTVs Sarah Jacob providing great visual images in arduous trip around the peninsula.

This January the topic taken by NDTV was on Clean India. For 12 continuous hours from 9 a.m under the lead of Amitabh Bachchan and Vikram Chandra, the NDTV team worked on enlisting shram dhan for this cause of Swach Bharat. The result was indeed great: 1.16 crore manhours were pledged for this great cause!

One of the issues related to the involvement of local public in cleaning 49 railway stations. What a facelift these spirited public men and women could give to the crowded Vikhroli station in Mumbai (it handles 3 lakh commuters a day!). What a change to the dingy and dirt-laden station by the dedicated work of around 500 attending to cleaning and decorating the station with lovely paintings!

With its multitude of television companies and prosperous media houses, I wish Chennai metro also rouses the interest of its spirited citizens and corporates to take up such issues of great need.
