Shanti and Sadhana through Music

Rajasthanis have been known for their yen for migration and assimilation with the local milieu in which they operate. One would see several examples of this in the flourishing businesses of  Rajasthanis in Kolkata, Mumbai and elsewhere. The desert state also seems to have something for it to make its citizens excel not just in business but in finance, legal issues, etc. K N Bhandari, who headed United India Insurance and later New India Assurance with distinction, used to point out  his hometown of Jodhpur accounting for the largest number of chartered accountants.

Years back I had written on P S Surana who started his legal practice in Chennai over three decades ago. With little knowledge of Tamil or of Chennai, by dint of hard work, he persevered in building Surana & Surana from scratch. Initially focusing on negotiated settlements and other alternative routes for resolving disputes, he expanded his clientele to large multinationals. He trained his wife to acquire proficiency and a degree in law and did likewise for his son Vinod and daughter-in-law Rashmi. Like the Tamil proverb, if the mother could leap eight feet, the son is

capable of leaping 16 feet. Vinod took his doctorate in law and helped the firm evolve as flourishing international attorneys. Along with his wife Rashmi he is steeply involved in culture and dozens of socially ameliorative activities, even as his parents focus on religious pursuits. Admiring the proficiency of his colleague Rajini Hariharan, a musician of standing, Vinod organised an evening of Carnatic music last year. He presented several musicians to render Saint Tyagaraja’s pancharatna kritis. This year, the Suranas have presented top class musicians to perform under the Shanti Sadhana Sangam (SSS). Combining his yen for social networking, Vinod presented  business leaders and other public figures, the Sangam provided musical treat of several maestros that included Sudha Raghunathan, Nithyashree Mahadevan, O S Arun, P Unnikrishnan, Priya Sisters, Sikkil Gurucharan, Mala Ramadorai ...with well-known accompanying artistes. The rich fare would have cost a bundle.

The Suranas offered these concerts for free at the auditorium at the elegant office building of Surana & Surana International Attorneys at Mylapore.

Let their tribe increase!
