Tribute

In the 1980s Rammohan Rao  was the Principal Information Officer of the Government of India and head of the Press Information Bureau. I remember Rao’s tenure as among the notable ones. Those years witnessed a frequent change in finance minister. I remember during 1986-91 there were seven finance ministers and four prime ministers, with similar changes in the Union Cabinet. Suave and gentle Rammohan maintained close rapport with these. The Economic Editors Conferences, spread over three days, provided opportunities to interact with policymakers as also to update on the performance and concerns of the different economic ministries.

Long after his retirement, Rammohan’s counsel was put to good use by several state governments like J&K and Punjab. He provided necessary contacts with Punjab that enabled us to produce a comprehensive issue on the state’s economy in 2000.

Rammohan was also a director on the board of Karnataka Bank. In his demise, the Indian information service has lost one of its active professionals.
