Tribute – M V Murugappan

M V Murugappan, the youngest son of A M M Vellayan Chettiar, headed the Coromandel Engineering Company, which was active in the civil construction business in the 1960s and 1970s and later the Carborundum Universal Ltd (CUMI). Under his leadership, CUMI grew as India’s leading manufacturer of abrasives and also went for backward integration projects in hydroelectric and thermal energy. After retirement, the mild-mannered MVM headed the AMM Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Murugappa group engaged in education, health, and other social welfare activities. He declined the chance to become president of ASSOCHAM. n
