Quality education through the PPP mode
WHILE I applaud the initiative of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on the issue of food at affordable prices to the masses, she must now  focus on another equally important aspect – offering quality education, at the primary and secondary levels. IE pointed to the government and public bodies running close to 90 per cent of primary and secondary level schools. Chennai metro alone has 285 schools run by the Corporation of Chennai. IE suggested upgrading the quality of these schools, which have good infrastructure in terms of land and buildings, through public-private partnership mode. Especially with the present legislation that has mandated two per cent of profits of large corporations to be spent on CSR schemes, it should be possible to get the involvement of hundreds of such companies to support education.

I found business leaders like TCS’s S Ramadorai and Shriram Group’s R Thyagarajan evincing interest in offering their expertise to upgrade the quality of corporation schools. Mayor of Chennai Saidai Duraiswamy whose Manidha Neyam Academy has a good record in coaching candidates for the Indian civil service examinations, has evinced interest in such a PPP mode. If Jayalalithaa would clear the scheme from the coming academic year, its effectiveness could be established over the remaining three years of her current tenure.
