SoA @ 80

The grand old man of the accounting profession has turned 80. The Society of Auditors (SoA) which predates the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has been rendering yeoman service to the cause of the profession.

IE has had close association with the Society. The renowned auditor D Rangaswamy (DR) led the SoA for several years with great distinction through his interest and involvement. Amiable and friend of all, DR ensured the involvement of all seniors in the profession and presented several administrators, business leaders and legal luminaries to address the members.

I have had the good fortune of speaking at several meetings at SoA on fiscal issues, particularly the annual meetings on the Union Budget. Yes, those were the days before the national television under Prannoy Roy sucked all attention to Delhi.  Seniors in the profession from Brahmayya & Co, R G N Price, Fraser & Ross, S Venkataraman & Co, and senior officials like the Chief Commissioner and other commissioners from the revenue department and senior leaders from industry used to attend these meetings. DR’s stature in the profession and as a past Chairman of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal helped.

I notice the Society is looking more inward and confining its focus on professional issues. With seniors like G Narayanaswamy, a doyen of the profession, involved in other public bodies, the appeal to wider sections of society seems to be missing.  But as the special feature on the profession published in this issue mentions, the horizons of the auditing profession have expanded manifold and cover global issues. Perhaps all the more the reason for the SoA to expand its expertise and interact with the general public. May be the SoA could act as the conscience keeper of the ICAI.

IE wishes SoA well in its march towards its centenary.
