Remembering Indira Sivasailam...

Mallika Srinivasan, Chairman & Managing Director of TAFE, instituted an annual award in the name of her mother Indira Sivasailam, in association with the Music Academy, Chennai. The award is presented to an outstanding musician every year. This year, the award was presented to Bombay Jayashri Ramnath, who has carved for herself a prominent place in the field of Carnatic music. Jayashri is known for her yen for innovation and proficiency in both Carnatic and Hindustani styles of music. The concert organised during

Navarathri drew rasikas in large numbers.

Jayashri’s renderings spread over two hours, had a good repertoire of compositions of the trinity of Carnatic music. Special mention should be made of her rendering of kritis in Purvi Kalyani, Suddha Dhanyasi and Desh. One did miss a Tamil song from Jayashri who became instantly famous through her lilting Narumugaiye in Mani Rathnam’s film Iruvar.

Indira Sivasailam, an accomplished singer in her own right, patronised Carnatic music with love and passion.  Blessed with a pleasing voice, she graduated in music from the Queen Mary’s College and she was an All India Radio artiste. She had the privilege of being trained by eminent gurus such as P S Narayanaswamy and D K Jayaraman.

Unfortunately, Mallika could not be present owing to indisposition. Daughter Lakshmi made a detailed presentation on the award. N Murali, President and Dr Pappu Venugopal Rao, Secretary, Music Academy were present.
