West Bengal: mindless malignancy

In West Bengal the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC won 34 out of 42 seats. The Left Parties could win only 2 seats.  Congress and BJP won 4 and 2 respectively. An interesting development is the sizeable vote share of 16.8 per cent of the BJP in the state.

Mamata Banerjee has been quite angry with Modi for the latter’s criticism of her rule. On the lines of Mani Shankar Aiyar, she was not averse to using extremely harsh language: “he wants to cause caste-based violence. We are telling the Election Commission that he should be arrested and should not be allowed to campaign in the state,” she said. She also labelled Modi “butcher of Gujarat.” She wouldn’t even send a note of congratulations.

Such adversarial relations did not win for the state much even from the UPA II government. Continuing this doesn’t augur well for West Bengal.
