Naidu will soon build a new Hyderabad

Chandrababu Naidu built Hyderabad as a thriving centre for economic activity. His focus on IT helped Andhra Pradesh catch up with Karnataka. In a very short time he built the Hi-tech city followed by the Hitex International Fair grounds. The National Construction Academy, International   School of Business, the Shilpakala Vedika... have been testimony to Naidu’s capacity as a builder of the capital. He also galvanised the enterprising spirit of Andhras. The state gained prominence for its enterprise, especially in the field of construction, pharmaceuticals and healthcare.

There was nithya kalyanam and pachchai thoranam: Naidu organised national and international conferences on a continuous basis on a variety of subjects including the construction industry, science and technology and finance. Hyderabad gained prominence as a city where things were happening.

CBN assuming charge as chief minister of Seemandhara gives hope of building a new capital city with equal verve and passion. It would fit in with BJP’s plan of building hundred new cities. The capital is likely to be in the Vijayawada-Guntur region. His dream of building a Singapore in Seemandhara with wide roads and well-built housing colonies will be realised if he plans the capital as a hi-tech city with extensive applications of IT, with an underground metro, like Lutyens’ Delhi and Chandigarh. Like Kuala Lumpur and several Chinese cities he should focus on multi-storeyed condominiums that would tackle right from the start, the problem of housing for the masses.

The only matter for concern is the wild promise Naidu made in the TDP’s election manifesto of writing off the humongous farm loans of around Rs 55,000 crore. The new state can ill afford to implement this promise. With its precarious finances, the Centre cannot also support such a large demand. Of course, like DMK’s C N Annadurai’s promise of 3 measures (5 kg) of rice a rupee, it did help the TDP win the election. But implementing this is not going to be easy. Like the DMK, he can bank on the gullible voter.
