The Jan Dhan bonanza

In his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Jan Dhan Yojana designed to bring an additional 7.50 crore people under banking services, mostly of rural population. A time limit of one year was set to achieve this. But the excellent work put in brought nearly 7.73 crore even by 19 November. Banks have been asked to open an additional 3.75 crore accounts before 26 January 2015 as 33 districts had less than 50 per cent coverage.

An additional, not quite anticipated, outcome of such large numbers opening bank accounts without minimum deposits, was the accretion to deposits by around Rs 6092 crore!  Obviously this quantum of money had been kept by the new breed of depositors in rice pots, kitchenware or under the pillows!  In the various efforts on rural development the Jan Dhan Yojana seems to be among the best.
