Striving for poverty alleviation

Hand in Hand India works towards poverty alleviation with an integrated and holistic approach. It operates in the areas of child labour elimination, women

empowerment, micro financing and health, environment and skill development. Having created over 2.3 million jobs in 10 years across the nation, Hand in Hand India strives to transfer this knowledge to the next generation; Hand in Hand Academy for Social Entrepreneurship has been established for achieving it.

Hand in Hand India is conducting a Global Social Entrepreneurship Programme during 7-10 February 2016 in Chennai. This intensive 4-day workshop will be spearheaded by Prof Kasturi Rangan of Harvard Business School. Additionally, eminent leaders in the field of social enterprise and micro finance such as Prof Sriram of IIM-B, M S Sundararajan (former Chairman, Indian Bank), Dr Savitha Shankar (Keio University, Japan), Social Entrepreneur Dr Hanumappa Sudharshan, Dr J Sadakkadulla (Regional Director, RBI) and K Venkateswara Rao (CGM, NABARD, TN-RO, Chennai) are to run panel discussions and sessions.

The sessions would bring together classic case

studies that are proved to be successful in the world of social enterprise. For instance, the Jain Irrigation case focuses on successful CSR strategy, while the case on Approtec deals with how technology can be successfully integrated with farming. Prof Kash brings his rich Harvard experience to the table. This is perfectly complemented by a panel on fund raising, a session on public private partnerships and how microfinance is a social enterprise!

The participant profile for this programme is rich and diverse. PhD scholars from across the globe, representatives from policy making institutions such as UNEP, social entrepreneurs themselves, NGOs, bankers and CSR professionals are just a few of the people interested in the programme. The programme provides a unique platform to bring together a plethora of participants and provide them an opportunity to network. The programme is expected to throw light on emerging trends in social entrepreneurship, corporate social responsibility, impactful case studies, microfinance as a social enterprise and funding for social enterprises.

Dr Kalpana Sankar, Managing Trustee, Hand in Hand India who has a double doctorate in physical sciences, women studies and self help groups (SHG), has been involved in the women’s SHG movement in Tamil Nadu for over two decades.“The G-SEP will provide the academic and practical context for social entrepreneurs with case studies and field visits,” said Dr Sankar.
