Referred to as New Chennai, Maraimalai Nagar is a planned city developed by CMDA as early as 1980.

MM Nagar, well served by road and rail connectivity, has several institutions nearby like the SRM University.

Business baron Anand Mahindra deserves credit for the spectacular transformation of Maraimalai Nagar, named after a great Tamil savant Maraimalai Adigal. Mahindra & Mahindra’s (M&M) initial partnership with Ford Motors and the sprawling Mahindra World City he developed nearby as among the first large SEZ are at the base of the frenetic pace of growth of MM Nagar.

    When Ford decided to set up a manufacturing facility near Chennai, Maraimalai Nagar was their quick choice. Little did people know that the vendor park built around would become a separate industrial cluster with so many local auto ancillary units. Today Maraimalai Nagar houses numerous auto component manufacturers, both local and global. The opening of Mahindra World City also contributed to the fast growth.

The Ford facility was a major investment that triggered the growth of the automobile industry. Initially, the American car maker entered Indian market with a 50:50 joint venture with Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.  Later, M&M withdrew from this venture.

The initial sedans, Escort and Fiesta based on European models were not popular. Ford gained market share with its Ikon and Figo models. The MM Nagar plant is an important centre for Ford exports. Over 25 per cent of cars produced here are exported to 35 countries all over the world.  

Ucal Fuel Systems, Visteon, India Pistons, Madras Engineering… are some of the prominent auto component manufacturers in Maraimalai Nagar.
