Welcome rains for damaged roads...
Cometh the rain, cometh broken roads. Showers of 2-3 days is all it takes for these newly laid roads to give in completely. This causes intolerable difficulties and even loss of lives.

Tamil Nadu leads the country in road accidents. Sudden craters that appear on the road are also reasons for loss of life. Recent rains washed away the claims of quality roads. Not just inner roads, but several main roads had pot holes. Many open drainages that were submerged in rain water posed life threat to commuters. Good roads drive a good economy, but the condition of roads in the metro is such a pity.

Although the Chennai Corporation made extensive efforts to repair the roads and improve drainage facilities before the monsoon, the efforts have borne no fruit. Nearly Rs 1000 crore has been spent on this already, but to little avail. The City Corporation published the names of road contractors who’d done a rather bad job and even imposed fines in tune to the damages caused. Large amount of the blame is being put on large contractors such SPL Infrastructure Private Limited and Boss Infrastructures Private Limited.

Chennai Corporation Joint Commissioner Dr Vijay Pingale who released the list of the erring contractors was quickly transferred. The strong and corrupt lobby had the last say on the issue that ended with the transfer of an honest officer. The Corporation has to now take major steps, not only to mend the poor condition of the roads but also to gain the public’s confidence, once again.

Look at the paradox. Chennai for the second consecutive year has emerged as the best overall city in the India Today Best City Awards 2014. It was based on a study of 30 capital and metro cities and 20 emerging cities on 12 parameters.

Pictures in and around Besant Nagar, one of the posh areas of the city. Like other areas this also suffers from bad road conditions. Bad roads affect the image of the city. Craters that suddenly spring up after showers pose threat to commuters.
