They add lustre to Padma Awards
FOR LONG, THE list of Padma awards used to bypass business leaders. Hardly a handful of these got included in the list of Republic Day honours. It is therefore, pleasant to come across a few familiar business leaders included in the list:
R Thyagarajan, founder of the Shriram Group, has been included in the list of awards for Padma Bhushan.

RT, after working for New India Assurance, founded the Shriram Group which emerged as the largest in the finances services sector. The Shriram Transport Finance Corporation pioneered financing pre-owned vehicles in a big way in the organised sector. Today the Group excels in transport finance, insurance, chit funds, consumer finance, property development,…It has a client base of 9.5 million and assets under management in excess of Rs.60,000 crore.
RT prefers to keep a low profile, modest to a fault and frugal in his habits. One who mobilised around Rs 5000 crore of investments from foreign financial institutions, he still moves around in a small car! He has deep interests in music, literature and mathematics and has been making handsome personal contributions to nurture these.

RT is a strong believer of private enterprise and supports enterprise through venture capital. After years of strong engagement with financial services, RT plans to focus also on the manufacturing sector. It indeed is surprising but welcome recognition for one who has scrupulously kept himself away from the lime light. Known for his sharp wit, logical analysis and articulation in English and Tamil, one looks forward to hearing him more in public forums. Congratulations Padma Bhushanji.
