It was not a magic show where the magician lights up the water. It’s the fate of the people in North Chennai, where drinking water has been polluted by oil seepage from underground pipelines. With closely packed houses, North Chennai already suffers severe congestion.
It has been ten months since the residents of Tondiarpet had complained about the water contamination to the government and the oil companies. Oil companies use underground pipes to transfer their products from the port to their terminals in the city. These, decades-old pipelines lack maintenance. After about 40 houses got contaminated and oil started to seep through the road, the authorities woke up to the issue.
The pipes, which belong to Bharat Petroleum, are being closed. Experts say that it would take a long time for the area to be clear of oil stains.
