Voice against noise

153 college students, along with 100 TAFE employees, reached out to about 7000 motorists in the city as part of ‘voice against noise’, to spread awareness on increasing noise levels in the city. Teaming up with the Chennai Traffic Police (CTP) and Indian Oil Corporation, the campaign created awareness amongst motorists. Permissible noise level that an ear can bear is around 70-90 db. But the noise levels on Chennai roads are around 130 db on an average and it shoots to 140 db in Guindy and T Nagar. The campaign also involved a poster-designing contest. Winning entries were awarded prizes by T R Kesavan, COO-Product Strategy and Corporate Relations, TAFE. “We have made an attempt to bring together various stake holders and it has paid off,” said Kesavan. Mahesh Kumar, DCP(Traffic-North) said that CTP was proud to be the campaign driver and they plan to make this initiative sustainable. “Police personnel stand all day amidst such air and noise pollution. For air pollution we provide them mask and we welcome public to give ideas to help our police personnel from increasing noise pollution,” said the DCP.
