A man who overcame odds…

Handicap is a state of mind. The International Day for Disabled-Friendly Persons was celebrated in the state with sports and cultural events. The two-day function ended with awards given away to winners by the TN Minister of Social Welfare and Nutritious Noon Meal Programme, P Valarmathi. Chartered Accountant, T A P Varadakutti was awarded the best self-employed(ortho) for the year 2013.

Though struck by polio, Varadakutti was encouraged by his father T P Srenivasachary, a Vedic scholar, to face the world boldly. Varadakutti stood first in school examinations and got a first class in B Com. He was denied a job at the State Bank of India on being differently abled. All these did not deter him.  He marched forward and completed his CA under P V Vijayaraghavan. He stands tall as a pillar of hope for several people. He organised a procession of differently-abled persons to travel in their 3-wheeler from Kanyakumari to Chennai and formed a District level handicapped Association. Almost two decades ago TAPV, in association with Mrs Meena Dadha of Mukti trust, rode by road to New Delhi from Chennai and created awareness on the problems of physically disabled.

Varadakutti was President of Rotary Club-Nungambakkam. He was president Exnora Club, Madras Central. Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, awarded him the title of Change Makers on behalf of Exnora International. He was appointed a member of the Government body of Handicapped Association and Advisor for the rehabilitation of handicapped people’ organisation. He is the state president of Tamil Nadu Udhavikaram Associates. With awards galore, this chartered accountant has added yet another feather to his crowded hat.
