Website to decongest traffic

IIT Madras has come up with a Real-time Traffic Information System (RTIS) that provides information of the current traffic situation through Variable Message Sign(VMS) boards and the website http://rtis.iitm.ac.in. For the pilot study, parts of OMR, Taramani Road, Velachery Main Road, Velachery Bypass Road, Sardar Patel Road, and Taluk Office Road were covered. Apart from providing traffic news and alerts, the website provides alternative routes, travel times and even live traffic images. VMS boards are electronic sign boards that provide the alternative route, congestion information and accident alerts to travelers, on road. The project jointly developed by IIT-M and C-DAC (Thiruvananthapuram) can be implemented to save time, energy and cost.
