HUL taps carbon capture tech to revamp detergents

FMCG major Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) is transforming product development through cutting-edge science and technology, boosting both sustainability and performance across its portfolio. At the company’s annual general meeting, Chairman Nitin Paranjpe highlighted three key research platforms—next-generation materials, biotechnology, and microbiome science—that are helping HUL develop innovative products to meet evolving consumer needs while protecting the planet.

“We collaborate with partners to reformulate products using lower-emission ingredients without compromising performance. We’re also developing alternatives to fossil-fuel-based chemicals in our laundry and cleaning products,” said Paranjpe.

As part of a major sustainability initiative, HUL has partnered with Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals and Fertilisers Limited and Carbon Clean Solutions to capture carbon dioxide from industrial energy use and convert it into soda ash (sodium carbonate). This sustainable soda ash is now used in HUL’s flagship detergent brands—Rin, Wheel, and Surf Excel—reducing reliance on fossil-fuel-based ingredients.

The company is also exploring bio-based alternatives like bio-surfactants (e.g., rhamnolipids) and plant-derived polysaccharides, pushing forward greener solutions in personal and home care.

“We listen to what consumers need and create better products that work well and are also good for the planet,” Paranjpe noted.

One such innovation is Stratos, a breakthrough skincare technology developed over five years and backed by more than 20 patents. Certified by the Skin Health Alliance UK and the British Skin Foundation, Stratos enhances skincare in soap bars while reducing palm oil use—cutting both emissions and dependency on forex-linked raw materials.

Another key product is Vim Ultra Pro floor cleaner, formulated with probiotic microorganisms that naturally break down dirt and stains. Developed over two years, it delivers sparkling, fragrant, and insect-free floors while being safe for the environment.

“After identifying consumer signals, we innovate to deliver superior formulations that cater to every consumer need while also being good for the planet,” Paranjpe stated.
