India is gearing up for AMP 2047

The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), Government of India, has initiated the formulation of the Automotive Mission Plan 2047 (AMP 2047) — a long-term strategic roadmap to position India as a global leader in the automotive sector by 2047. The initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 and is being led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H.D. According to an official statement, AMP (2047 will build on the successes of previous automotive mission plans, which supported robust industry growth through collaborative efforts across stakeholders. The new roadmap aims to boost innovation, strengthen global competitiveness, and drive sustainable development across the automotive value chain.

The inaugural meeting of AMP 2047’s Sub-Committees was recently held to define key objectives and the planning framework. Dr. Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary at MHI, underscored the strategic intent of the plan: “The vision for 2047 is not just aspirational—it includes concrete targets for exports, industry growth, and global leadership. We must move beyond individual technologies or companies and focus on India’s role in the global automotive ecosystem.”

The meeting brought together key representatives from ministries including Power, Road Transport & Highways, Commerce, Petroleum & Natural Gas, DPIIT and Environment, along with industry bodies such as SIAM, ACMA, CII, and FICCI, as well as academic institutions, think tanks, and testing agencies, according to a statement.

AMP 2047 will follow an industry-led, consultative approach, drawing inputs from Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), component suppliers, policymakers, and consumers. It will also address challenges such as technological disruption, regulatory evolution, and infrastructure gaps, including EV charging networks.

Seven dedicated Sub-Committees—comprising experts from government, industry, and academia—will guide the roadmap and monitor progress toward milestones set for 2030, 2037, and 2047.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment—under Minister Kumaraswamy’s leadership—to fostering a self-reliant, innovative, and sustainable automotive ecosystem. Insights from Sub-Committee deliberations will be consolidated and presented to the Apex Committee chaired by Kamran Rizvi, Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries.
