DICV shifts gears to rail for sustainable logistics

In a significant step towards building a more sustainable and efficient logistics ecosystem, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Ltd. (DICV), the Indian subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG and manufacturer of the BharatBenz brand of trucks and buses, has commenced its first rail-based movement of trucks.

The company has transported 64 BharatBenz trucks by train from Singaperumal Koil railway station, located near its Oragadam manufacturing facility in Chennai, to Faruknagar in Haryana. This shift marks a decisive move away from traditional road transport.

By choosing rail as the mode of transport, DICV was able to avoid nearly 50 tonnes of CO₂ emissions in a single shipment and earned 84 Green Points under its sustainability scoring system. The move also resulted in several operational advantages including reduced odometer readings, no tyre wear, and zero transit damage—all of which contribute to faster, cleaner, and safer deliveries, according to a company spokesperson.

While cost efficiency is a factor, DICV said the shift to rail transport was primarily motivated by sustainability and customer-centric benefits.

The company highlighted intangible advantages such as reduced wear and tear, lower odometer usage, and damage-free delivery—factors that contribute to long-term value and enhanced customer satisfaction.

This initiative is part of Daimler’s broader vision to create smart, digitalised, and eco-conscious supply chain solutions across India.
