Double-decker buses make a comeback in Chennai

After 17 years, Double-decker buses will run on Chennai roads. A double-decker electric bus was gifted to the state government.

Ashok Leyland, flagship of the Hinduja Group, along with Switch Mobility and US-based Tamil Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) gifted a double-decker electric bus worth Rs 1.89 crore to the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday inaugurated Chennai’s new double-decker tourism bus service, which will connect the city’s iconic landmarks and heritage sites including LIC, Spencer Plaza, Light House among others.

The bus will operate with panoramic viewing facilities, enabling a comprehensive view of the city’s major tourist and heritage locations, said a government release.

Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai) Ltd has invited bids for procurement, supply, operation and maintenance of 20 double-decker air-conditioned electric buses.
