Why there is panic around Anthropic’s new AI tool?

Over the last few days, the new plugin by US-based AI company Anthropic has been making waves and has been hot topic of discussion. It is said that the new AI tool could replace dozens of software tools. Here is all you need to know.

What is the new tool?

Claude Cowork, a new “agentic” AI platform, is able to automatically operate the Multi-step business workflows. This model stands out from the traditional AI tools which used to be a chatbox that answered the question. This Tool was launched on 3 February along with 11  specialised plugins.

What are the features of Claude cowork?

This latest plugin covers labour-intensive sectors such as legal, finance, sales, data analysis and product management. To give an example, this plugin can independently analyse financials and build models, while the legal plugin can review contracts and manage compliance.

Why has Claude Cowork caused panic?

The main reason for the concern is that it is said that Claude Cowork directly challenges the labour-intensive business model that has powered the Indian IT sector for decades.   Indian IT giants like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro have relied on large teams of software engineers for routine tasks. Claude Cowork can now automate many of these functions at a lower cost. Investors fear that if clients use AI agents to handle the tasks, the need for large vendor teams will eventually decrease, which will impact the billable hours and margins of IT companies.

How has the IT industry reacted to the developments?

However, IT industry executives have downplayed the concerns. In a post earnings call, Cognizant CEO Ravi Kumar S said the assumption that new AI tools can be plugged into enterprise environments and immediately replace large parts of IT services work is flawed.

The economic value from these technologies has not yet meaningfully shifted into enterprises, he said.
