The Winds Have Changed

Listen to this article

The Indian wind energy sector is back on track after a prolonged dull period. The sector witnessed highest every capacity addition of 6.1 gigawatts in 2025-26. India’s wind energy capacity stands at 56.09 gigawatts (GW), making it the world’s fourth biggest wind power market. The country aims to reach 100 GW of wind capacity by 2030 and further increase it to 155 GW by 2035, as it pushes towards the goal of 500 GW non-fossil capacity and net zero emissions by 2070.

India’s gross wind power potential is pegged at 695.5 GW at 120 metres and 1163.9 GW at 150 metres above ground level. Majority of the assessed wind potential at 150 Meter is concentrated in resource rich states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana. From a pure play wind or solar, the renewable energy game is moving towards a hybrid model with the emergence of battery storage.

In this cover story, Industrial Economist brings together voices from industry leaders on what are the key opportunities and challenges which need to be addressed for the sector as it pushes towards the ambitious target.
