IE suggested in its June issue the setting up of a multi-speciality government hospital at the King’s Institute campus at Guindy.
Happy at the initiative of chief minister M K Stalin. President Kovind will lay the foundation on 2 August.
At The King’s Institute campus at Guindy, a special hospital for senior citizens, the National Institute of Ageing, was taking shape. This was converted at remarkable speed into the Government Corona Hospital [GCH] and was inaugurated by then Chief Minister E K Palaniswamy on 7 July 2020. In its first year, the GCH has earned a reputation for treating over 20,000 patients with low mortality.
Impressed with this record and popularity for effective treatment, the Tamil Nadu government has announced setting up a 500 bed super multi-speciality hospital at the King’s Institute campus over 4 acres of land.
Chennai has a reputation as the healthcare capital of India, with a large number of government and private hospitals, both general and specialised. The Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital – Madras Medical College, The Stanley Medical College and Hospital, The Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital, The Omandurar Multi-speciality hospital and College and the Royapettah Hospital have been reputed for the quality medicare offered for decades. Yet south Chennai lacked such a facility. The new super speciality hospital in Guindy would thus meet a long felt need for the citizens of south Chennai.
The location is ideal on several counts. The King’s institute of preventive medicine was established in 1899. The campus is spread over 47 acres on the banks of the Adyar River. The institute has been a pioneer in vaccines and has established a strong research base.
Guindy is a reputed Centre for higher education. The Guindy Engineering College, the AC-College of Engineering/Anna University, The IIT – Madras, the CLRI and the Tamil Nadu MGR Medical University are located in Guindy. Besides Guindy is also a strong transport hub: it has the suburban and metro railway stations and two important highways. The concentration of hundreds of commercial offices and dozens of high-rise buildings will ensure high quality talent and custom for the new hospital. – SV
