A Champion at Fifteen
This perspective shaped the journey of 15-year-old Shane Chandariya, who made history by winning the F4 Indian Championship while racing for Chennai Turbo Riders. Born in Kenya and of Indian heritage, Shane describes the title moment with measured emotion. “I knew throughout the race that I had enough to win the championship, but it only sank in after I crossed the line,” he says. F4 is a motor racing championship for formula racing cars that adhere to Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Formula 4 regulations. It is a feeder series, serving as the first step in the single-seater racing pyramid. Not only does it give young drivers a taste of international competition, but it also awards the all-important Super Licence points, which are needed to cut F1.
Shane’s journey began at the age of five, sparked by a simple promise from his father, an own go-kart if he finished with the fastest lap time. Little later, Shane went on to dominate Kenya’s karting circuit, learning vital lessons in patience when rookie rules denied him a championship despite race wins. Titles followed, along with a move to the UK and Europe, where setbacks, strategy challenges and mechanical issues tested his resolve.
Winning with Control
Racing, Shane believes, is about restraint as much as speed. “There’s a time to push, but aggression without control usually ends your race,” he says. That balance carried him through the season to his championship win. For Shane, the podium is not the destination but the foundation. With aspirations of reaching Formula One, he credits F4 for teaching him long-term thinking, discipline and consistency. These are qualities that define champions.
