While total registrations of battery-powered vehicles witnessed a slight month-on-month decline, the E2W category showed resilience, recording upward momentum. On a year-on-year basis, EV registrations across all segments still reflected robust growth, rising 28% compared to June 2024, according to data from the Vahan Dashboard.
Q1 volumes: surpass half a million
In a significant milestone, total registrations of battery-powered vehicles across all segments crossed the half-million mark in the first quarter (Q1) of the current fiscal year. EV volumes during April to June 2025 stood at approximately 5.3 lakh units—up from 3.97 lakh units during the same period last year. Of these, electric two-wheelers accounted for around 2.99 lakh units, followed by electric three-wheelers with 1.89 lakh units, and electric passenger vehicles (including electric cars and SUVs), which contributed 39,400 units.
Total EV registrations in June 2025 stood at 1.80 lakh units, slightly below the 1.81 lakh units registered in May. Nevertheless, electric two-wheeler sales showed improvement, growing from 1 lakh units in May to about 1.05 lakh units in June. This marked a significant increase compared to June 2024, when E2W sales were just over 80,000 units.
TVS Motor retains top position
TVS Motor maintained its leadership position in the electric two-wheeler segment during Q1 FY2025, with sales of nearly 70,000 units. Bajaj Auto followed closely, securing second place with 64,100 units.
Ola Electric claimed the third position with around 59,000 units. Ather Energy followed with approximately 41,000 units, while Hero MotoCorp and Greaves registered 21,000 and 12,400 units, respectively.
In contrast, the electric three-wheeler segment saw a decline in June, with total registrations falling to about 60,600 units—down from over 66,000 units in May.
Electric cars hold steady even as competition heats up
Meanwhile, the electric passenger vehicle segment recorded close to 13,000 registrations in June, slightly lower than 13,105 in May and 13,287 in April.
Tata Motors retained its dominant position in the electric passenger vehicle market during Q1, with nearly 14,000 registrations. However, JSW MG continued to gain ground, selling about 11,800 units during the quarter. Mahindra Electric also performed steadily with 8,400 units, while Hyundai and BYD followed with approximately 1,900 and 1,370 units, respectively.
