Chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday inaugurated the scheme to provide subsidies to gig workers for buying E-scooters.
The scheme was announced in the state budget for 2025-2026. As per the announcement, the Tamil Nadu government has planned to give Rs 20,000 each as a subsidy to 2000 gig workers. Rs 4 crore allocated under the online gig worker welfare scheme
Tamil Nadu Platform-based Gig Workers Welfare Board was formed on 26 December 2023, and so far 23,687 gig workers have registered across the state, an official statement said.
Today, the subsidy was distributed to 100 gig workers.
Adding on to that, to ensure the safety of the gig workers in Tamil Nadu, a Rs 5 lakh accidental insurance scheme has been implemented, the state government said.
To provide comfort and convenience to the gig workers, air-conditioned restrooms have been set up in Chennai and Coimbatore.
This comes amid the recent chaos that happened on Christmas and New Year’s Eve regarding the gig workers, who went on strike seeking a slew of welfare measures and better pay. Initiating the scheme during the time of elections might seem like the right move.
