Univ. of Western Australia Chennai campus to open in September

The University of Western Australia is expanding its footprint in Chennai and Mumbai.

The University is investing Rs 560 crore for both the Chennai and Mumbai campuses, the Chennai campus will be located in Porur DLF City. Both campuses will be fully ready in September 2026.

This initiative mainly focuses on providing high-quality education to the Indian market, with a strong aim of hiring locally and fostering industrial collaboration.

The University will start accepting applications within two weeks and the plan is to enrol 500 students and 100 faculty members in the initial stage. Starting with the undergraduate program and with the post-graduate and research programs in the pipeline.

Regarding the research, the university emphasises that it will pay attention to research from day one, exploring opportunities and suggestions from the Indian context.

In terms of fees, UWA aims to make its programs accessible by charging fees comparable to what domestic students pay in Australia, said its Vice-Chancellor Professor Amit Chakma. The combination of government subsidy and the student contribution, which is usually paid later through a loan supported by the government.

Industry partnership with HCL 

When asked about the partnership with HCL, Amit mentioned that the main reason for the partnership is to prepare students to respond to the  Indian market needs,  to give an industrial perspective to the students, and to contribute to skill-based learning. The university also intends to link up with industries in Chennai and Mumbai to provide students with learning opportunities.
