Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sadness over the passing of Vummidi Ethiraj.
He will always be remembered for his efforts in crafting the historic Sengol that was presented to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, he said.
The Sengol, the sacred sceptre symbolized the transfer of power from British rule to independent India in 1947. It ceremonially installed in the new Sansad Bhavan (Parliament) by Modi on 28 May 2023.
Recalling the honour of meeting Vummidi Ethiraj in 2023 when the government gave the Sengol a place of pride in the new Parliament building, Modi stated that his life and craftsmanship represent a remarkable connection between India’s glorious traditions and the national journey, and extended his heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers.
Vummidi Ethiraj 100th birth anniversary celebration was held on 20 April 2025.
