Racing ahead other states, Lakhani assures that Tami Nadu will be the only state to have 50 per cent green power and the grid capacity would increase to 170,000 million units by 2030.

“During the recent cyclone, close to 10,000 transformers were affected across the state. 7000 of our employees worked round the clock and restored power

within 24 hours,” said Rajesh Lakhani, Chairman and Managing Director, TANGEDCO. He pointed to four major points that TANGEDCO was currently working on. Quality power is the first target. For certain industries, there shouldn’t be tripping even for 1 minute.

The department is working to bring it down to a minimum level, beginning with Sriperumbudur becoming tripping free soon. The next focus is on converting all residential meters to smart meters. This will allow consumers to check their power consumption almost real time and act based on that. Prepaid payment will also be rolled out soon. Racing ahead other states, Lakhani assures that Tami Nadu will be the only state to have 50 per cent green power and the grid capacity would increase to 170,000 million units by 2030. As of now, green power constitutes 18 per cent. Industries that aim to cut their carbon footprint can benefit from this. Even now, for an additional tariff of 10 per cent, TANGEDCO provides green power that is RE certified.

Adding to the basket of green power, 14,500 MW of pumped storage hydroelectric projects at an investment of Rs 70,000 crore through public private partnership is being planned. Apart from this, the state is also looking to add offshore wind plants along its coast.
