Air India flight AI171 crashes after take-off from Ahmedabad

A London-bound Air India flight carrying 242 people, including passengers and crew members, crashed into a residential area shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad Airport this afternoon. Several casualties are feared, though official confirmation is awaited.

Air India confirmed in a statement on social media that flight AI171, operating between Ahmedabad and London Gatwick, was involved in a tragic accident shortly after departure at 13:38 hrs. The aircraft involved was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

The flight was carrying 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 1 Canadian and 7 Portuguese nationals. Emergency response teams have begun rescue operations, and the injured are being transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

In a message expressing profound sorrow, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said, “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event.”

He said that the airline’s immediate priority was to support affected individuals and their families. “We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency teams at the site and to provide all necessary care and support.” he added.

A dedicated passenger hotline has been established at 1800 5691 444 for families seeking information. An emergency centre and support team have also been activated to handle inquiries and provide assistance.
