The facility will produce high-quality tempered glass under the globally recognized brand “Engineered by Corning.” These products will be supplied to both domestic and international markets, according to an official statement.

The new Optiemus tempered glass facility has been built with an initial investment of ₹70 crore. The facility’s advanced infrastructure will enable the transformation of raw materials into premium tempered glass, with an initial production capacity of 25 million units per year. This phase will generate direct employment for over 600 people. In Phase 2, the facility will scale up to 200 million units per year, with an additional investment of ₹800 crore, creating more than 4,500 direct jobs.

The facility incorporates a range of manufacturing processes, including scribing, shaping, polishing, chemical tempering, coating, printing, and lamination. All processes are carried out under stringent quality inspections, ensuring that high-quality, standardized tempered glass will be available to Indian consumers for the first time, produced locally.

“Tempered glass is a critical accessory for mobile phones, and its local manufacturing is a key achievement in India’s Make in India initiative,” said Vaishnaw. He also highlighted that India is on the path to becoming self-reliant in electronics, with plans to produce every mobile phone component, including chips, cover glasses, and laptop components.

Ashok Kumar Gupta, Chairman of Optiemus Infracom Ltd, said, “India has long relied on imports for tempered glass, but with this initiative, we aim to build global-scale capabilities to serve both Indian and international markets.” Gupta also expressed the aspiration that all Indian mobile phone users will soon use Make in India tempered glass, certified by BIS and bearing fog marking for added protection.

The domestic market for tempered glass is estimated to exceed 500 million units, valued at around ₹20,000 crore. The global market is worth over $60 billion, presenting substantial opportunities for India to expand its manufacturing capabilities.

Vaishnaw also outlined the impressive growth of India’s electronics sector over the past 11 years, with production surging sixfold to ₹11.5 lakh crore. Exports have crossed ₹3 lakh crore, and the sector now supports 2.5 million jobs. He noted that the entire electronics ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with increasing value addition at every step. He revealed that Made in India chips will soon be rolled out, marking another significant milestone in the country’s electronics manufacturing journey.

He also stressed India’s strength in design innovation. He pointed to an IIT Madras-incubated startup that has developed India’s first microcontroller, which is set to be deployed in Indian-made products. Additionally, Indian manufacturers are now exporting railway equipment that meets European quality standards.
