The TVK government claimed that in 100 days since assuming office it has attracted Rs 1 lakh crore worth of investment commitments with a potential for generating 1.25 lakh jobs. This is on average a thousand crore of committed capital for every single day we have been in office, the press release said.
State governments across India hold investment conclaves and sign a slew of pacts. The TVK government’s conclave was no different. Apart from the pacts signed, which include an array of green field and brown field projects spread across various sectors, industries minister S Keerthana asked the captains of industries to flag their problems and where they need support. She said that the state lagged behind in sectors such as food processing and life sciences and required sharper focus and investment. Addressing the legislative assembly some time ago, the minister also acknowledged the need to fix infrastructure gaps in state owned industrial parks.
Tamil Nadu is a highly industrialised state housing the highest number of factories which are well diversified in sectors and across the state. All these have been possible because of policy continuity, despite regime changes. This was highlighted in the Industrial Economist May 2026 cover story, Tamil Nadu – Harbour of Stability. The nascent TVK Government too has signaled policy continuity with this maiden conclave. This is an important step as there were concerns across industries when the new government was formed. Now things appear to be settling down and the state government has also started work on a new industrial policy and sought inputs from stakeholders.
While there is always scrutiny and debate about the nature of MoUs and projects, investment conclaves are necessary part of a larger exercise to woo investments. Beyond numbers, the state governments showcase their strength and also their support for industries in a highly competitive environment that exists among states. Tamil Nadu faces stiff competition from neighboring states such as Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and others.
Chief Minister Vijay could have leveraged this large investor gathering and spoken few reassuring words to perk up investors’ confidence and speed up on ground activity. Tamil Nadu government has set an ambitious target of a USD 1.5 trillion economy. More than intentions, execution matters in achieving this target. Conversion of MoUs into actual projects, addressing the bottlenecks faced by the industries and an updated industrial policy in line with current trends are sine qua non. Not surprisingly, the Vijay regime which has ascended to the throne at Fort St George on an unprecedented support from GenZ is keenly watched with more than customary interest. The curiosity about what it does is naturally high.
