Centre bans sugar exports

The Indian government has banned export of sugar with immediate effect till 30 September 2026, or till further orders, whichever is earlier.

Earlier, the government had allowed restricted import of sugar.

The prohibition shall not apply to Sugar being exported to the EU and USA under CXL and TRQ quota, as per the prescribed procedure in the respective Public Notices, according to a 13 May notification.

Export of Sugar under the Advance Authorization Scheme (AAS) shall continue to be governed as per existing provisions of the Foreign Trade Policy, 2023 and the Handbook of Procedures, 2023., it added.

Export of Sugar shall be permitted in respect of consignments, fulfilling certain conditions prior to the date of notification.

Export shall be allowed on the basis of permission granted by the Government of lndia to other countries to meet their food security needs and based on the request of their governments, it added.

The Government had permitted export of 15 LMT of sugar during the Sugar Season 2025–26. It also allowed additional 5 LMT of sugar to willing sugar mills.
