El-Nino: TN govt forms expert committee

Tamil Nadu government has formed expert committee for El-Nino under the aegis of Tamil Nadu Disaster Risk Reduction Agency.

S Kanmani, Director, Centre for Climate Change and Disaster Management, Anna University, Prof. Balaji Narasimhan, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras, Nambi Appadurai, Director, Climate Resilience Practice at World Resources Institute, India, Prof. Dr. R. Ramesh, Advisor, Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company, Dr. R Venkatesan, Member Technical, Coastal Regulation Zone, Dr. J.K. Patterson Edward, Director, Suganthi Devadason Marine Research Institute and weather blogger Pradeep John will be members of the expert committee, according to an official release.

As per weather reports, there is possibility of severe El-Nino in 2026. As a result, South West Monsoon is expected to bring lower than normal rainfall, while the North East Season is expected to bring heavy rains with possibility of floods, it noted.

The expert committee will closely monitor the rainfall and draught like conditions, identify the vulnerable areas and provide scientific recommendations and also work towards enhancing state government’s preparedness to handle disaster situations.

Based on the expert committee recommendations, the state government will take measures to tackle El-Nino situation.
