No change in minimum balance, says HDFC

HDFC Bank has clarified that there has been no change in the Average Monthly Balance (AMB) requirements for any of its savings account variants.

The bank said it offers multiple savings account types tailored to different customer profiles, each with varying AMB requirements based on the value-added services provided. The AMB for the Regular Savings Account remains at ₹10,000, while the Savings Max Account continues to require ₹25,000.

All account variants are available across rural, semi-urban, urban, and metro branches. However, given customer usage patterns in metro areas, the bank will prioritise offering the Savings Max Account to new customers in metro branches.

The clarification from HDFC Bank comes in the wake of the decision by private lender ICICI Bank to hike Average Monthly Balance (AMB) for new savings accounts opened on/or after 1 August 2025 to Rs. 50,000, particularly for metro and urban locations. However, the ICICI Bank reduced this to Rs.15,000 following customer feedback.
