Knowledge Will Power Tamil Nadu’s Trillion-Dollar Dream

Tamil Nadu’s ambition to become a trillion-dollar economy will not be driven by capital alone. Dr. J Jeyaranjan, Executive Vice Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission stresses that the state’s future relies on how effectively it mobilises its global knowledge networks.

“Today we can source money. What we need is collaboration from global players in cutting-edge areas,” highlighted Dr Jeyaranjan. Across the US, Europe, and East Asia, Tamil professionals occupy influential positions in fields ranging from material science and biotechnology to artificial intelligence and quantum computing. “Many of them began their journeys in Tamil Nadu’s public universities. But somehow, we have lost the connect,” pointed Dr. Jeyaranjan. He contrasts this with institutions such as the IITs and other private universities that actively cultivate alumni engagement. Apart from financial contribution, these alumni bring in research and other latest know-how back to their alma mater. Rebuilding these institutional bridges could transform higher education, research culture and startup ecosystems across the state. “What we see in the IITM Research Park can happen in any of the state universities here,” said Dr. Jeyaranjan. This would create a multiplier effect that could extend well beyond campuses.

The State Planning Commission is working closely with the industry department to ensure that new technologies are familiarised across the MSME sector too. They are central to Tamil Nadu’s economic strength. Instead of isolated interventions, the focus is on creating shared facilities in sectors where Tamil Nadu has strong industrial presence, such as leather, non-leather manufacturing, electronics, etc. “Leading industrialists have been invited to help design sector-specific blueprints that outline infrastructure needs, operational models, timelines and costs. These discussions aim to translate emerging technologies into practical, accessible tools for smaller firms,” said Dr Jeyaranjan. This will strengthen MSME competitiveness and ensure that innovation-driven growth is broad-based, inclusive and sustainable.

Dr. Jeyaranjan’s message is clear, “reconnecting global Tamil expertise with local institutions is not just vital for our goal of trillion-dollar economy, it is foundational to Tamil Nadu’s long-term leadership in a knowledge-driven world.
