Maharashtra received the largest share of central funding under the scheme, amounting to ₹200.18 crore, as part of the Centre’s efforts to enhance electric mobility and public transportation infrastructure across the country.
As of July 31, 2025, a total of 7,293 e-buses have been sanctioned across 18 States and Union Territories. Following Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have each been allotted 750 buses, Rajasthan 675, and Madhya Pradesh 582.
Other major allocations include Gujarat and Haryana (450 each), Bihar and Odisha (400 each), Punjab (347), and Chhattisgarh (240). Smaller allocations have gone to states such as Assam, Meghalaya, and Uttarakhand, as well as UTs like Ladakh, Puducherry, and Chandigarh.
In addition to Maharashtra, several other states received funding support. Bihar was allotted ₹87.55 crore, Odisha ₹47.72 crore, Rajasthan ₹44.46 crore, and Chhattisgarh ₹30.19 crore. The total funds disbursed so far under the scheme amount to ₹475.44 crore.
The PM-eBus Sewa Scheme, launched on August 16, 2023, by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme aimed at expanding city bus operations by deploying 10,000 electric buses through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. It provides central assistance of ₹20,000 crore.
Eligible cities include those with populations between 3 to 40 lakh, and State/UT capitals with fewer than 3 lakh residents, as per the 2011 Census. The central assistance is offered on a per-kilometre basis for a 10-year period: ₹24 for standard 12-metre buses, ₹22 for 9-metre midi buses, and ₹20 for 7-metre mini buses. Additionally, the Centre offers 100% support for behind-the-meter power infrastructure.
For depot infrastructure, central assistance is provided at 60% for state cities, 90% for capital cities of hilly states or UTs with legislatures, and 100% for capital cities of UTs without legislatures.
The PM-eBus Sewa Scheme is part of the broader PM E-DRIVE initiative, which mandates compliance with the Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP). PMP requires progressive localisation of electric vehicle components, promoting domestic manufacturing. This is expected to indirectly benefit startups and MSMEs across the country, including in smaller states like Tripura, by increasing demand for locally sourced components.
